And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
— Romans 8.28
“Good” refers to final glory. Everything in the Christian life is working toward your eternal glory. Note how we have been called according to His purpose, 8.28b.
In 8.29, Paul defines God’s eternal purpose in our salvation. He explains why God is causing everything to work together for our glory. The purpose for our being saved is for us to be conformed to the image of Christ. God saved you to make you like Jesus. Conformed means “being in the same form with.” That is God’s plan. See Philippians 3.20-21. God does the work. We play the passive role. It is done to us, not by us.
Image means “replica.” We are literally being shaped into the replica of Jesus. The whole plan of salvation is to make us like Him, inwardly & outwardly. This is what God had in mind from before time began … to redeem fallen man so He could bring many sons to glory, Hebrews 2.10.
8.29b explains WHY God wants this. “Firstborn” means “preeminent one,” or “the most notable one.” The ultimate end of our salvation is the glory of the Son. And God wants to redeem us so that we may forever recognize the majesty and wonder of His Son. Our ultimate purpose in being saved is to bring glory to God and His Son.
Praise God for His glorious salvation!
